Evidence of Water Found in Moon Mineral

The team of geologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Tennessee, has found that hydroxyl groups are structurally bound in minerals in the rocks month.

The team discovered in a calcium phosphate mineral water - apatite - in basalt collected from the surface of the moon by Apollo 14 astronauts in 1971 ago. More precisely, they did not find "water" with the H2O molecule. Instead, they found hydrogen in the form of hydroxyl anions OH-, which binds to the mineral apatite lattice.

"Hydroxide is a chemical which is relatively close hubunganya with water," explained co-author George Rossman - Caltech professor of mineralogy. "If you heat the apatite, the hydroxyl ions will 'rot' and out into the water," he added. These findings will be detailed in this week's edition of the journal Nature in
